Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, New York City was enduring a weighty hunger crisis—mainly in marginalized communities.
New Yorkers have been struggling to make ends meet. Nearly 1.2 million New Yorkers have been suffering from food insecurity, including one in five New York City children.
New York City has seen these numbers swell during the pandemic and the danger shows no signs of ebbing. More than 1.5 million New Yorkers now experience food insecurity, including one in three children.
Many people going through food insecurity don’t know when or where their next meal will come from. Frequently, this may be a is due to the inability to afford basic necessities—such as rent, utilities, or medical bills and their grocery budget. Most people are not immune from food insecurity for a brief period of time (for example, while a working age adult is between jobs) or for much longer (for example, a senior living on a fixed income).
The COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing financial crisis has made New York City’s hunger crisis even worse. Food insecurity has risen by 54 percent citywide during the pandemic—and 64 percent among children. However, hunger doesn’t fall equally throughout the city. particularly hard hit are the communities of color that have been disproportionately harmed by decades of policy inequities and systemic failures
Cordell Cleare (City Council Candidate) has heard the call and worked hard to contribute to a solution that helps and uplifts the community. Cordell Cleare has worked tirelessly to help stem the rising tide of food insecurity.
This event in conjunction with Food Justice & Agatha House Foundation, is just one of many events to help combat hunger in NYC.
